What is a sunroom called in Florida?

The term “sunroom” — referring to a bright and airy room with large windows — is extremely common in the United States, including in Florida. However, sunrooms are also called “Florida rooms” in the state of Florida because of how popular they have become in the Sunshine State.

There are several other names that you may have heard of, too: These include terms like “patio room” or “three-season room”, but they usually refer to the same thing. Essentially, it is a room addition that uses the same type of building materials and and style as your house, although some are built with aluminum, acrylic, or vinyl window enclosures.

These rooms are specifically designed for relaxing with a nice view of your outdoor space, without the annoyance of pests or extreme weather. They are also highly versatile and can serve as:

• A comfortable spot for reading books
• A dining or entertaining space
• A home office or workspace
• A playroom or craft room for children
• A second living room
• Etc

Some mistakenly call sunrooms “solariums,” but solariums have glass roofs, which are impractical in Florida due to heat and storm risks. Florida rooms are also confused with lanais, which are more like covered porches with screens but no full enclosure or insulation. While lanais offer shade and ventilation, Florida rooms provide better weather protection and year-round comfort.

In northern states, the term “four-season room” is common, but it typically applies to colder climates. In Florida, most three-season rooms can be upgraded with insulation and climate control for year-round use.
